Becky Lynch has been and still is phenomenal, and it has become hard to really root for her at this point. It’s almost the Goldberg Syndrome, and no, I’m not talking about a retired pro wrestler who comes back despite never being that great at pro wrestling. I’m talking about WCW Goldberg where Goldberg was phenomenal as he was rising up and taking out people left and right. But then he was top dog, and he just kept on winning, and the only time he showed any vulnerability was in the most ridiculous circumstances. Luckily, nobody has brought out farming equipment to take out Lynch, but it seems like things just aren’t going anywhere at this point.
The big comparison that Lynch got as she was rising up was Stone Cold Steve Austin. But the reason that Stone Cold worked so well is that he was always punching up. Even when he got to the top of the mountain, he never managed to stay there long. He had one six-month title reign. Otherwise, it was three months or less. You can’t fight the man when you are the man, and Becky Lynch has now held onto the title for over a year.
I get that Becky Lynch is “The Man,” but the reason that worked for Ric Flair is nobody wants to cheer for The Man. They want the Man to be defeated. It seems like they’ve toyed with Becky Lynch turning heel, but it hasn’t been anything substantial. I don’t think that’s the answer though.
What they need to do is have someone beat Lynch clean, and it needs to be somebody new. You don’t create a megastar like Lynch and then have her trade wins with someone so they don’t get the full momentum push.
Shayna Baszler would have made a ton of sense as the one to unseat Lynch, but they’ve already ruined that opportunity. Bianca Belair has already aligned with the Street Profits so she’s a babyface which wouldn’t work. Io Shirai would be amazing, but they would never do that. So let’s just turn Belair heel, give her the power of the McMahons behind her and make people feel very uncomfortable as she challenges people’s beliefs by saying she deserves it after all the African American community has been put through in the world and especially the WWE. Sadly, pointing out valid racism is a booable offense, but it would make Becky Lynch the beloved fighter which is what she needs right now.
But overall, good for Becky Lynch. She got herself over, made it so the WWE couldn’t ignore it, and has turned into a mega superstar. Her title reign being too long is probably a complaint she can deal with.
